How to Calculate Your Resting Heart Rate
In last week’s article, we taught you how to calculate your maximum heart rate. In this post, you’ll learn how to calculate your resting heart rate. Once you have both of these numbers, you’ll be able to determine your personal heart rate zones so that you can start optimizing your workouts through heart rate training.*
RESTING HEART RATE
For a more accurate calculation of your heart rate zones, find your resting heart rate as well as your maximum heart rate. Here are two methods to calculate your resting heart rate:
Check your heart rate upon waking up naturally (not by an alarm). Once you’re awake, continue lying down and rest peacefully for 5 minutes. Once 5 minutes have passed, check your heart rate.
With a heart rate monitor on, lie down and fully relax for 10-15 minutes. Then obtain your heart rate reading.
Now that you’ve found your maximum and resting heart rates, you can start training more effectively and efficiently by choosing which zones you want to train in to reach your fitness goals.
Make the most out of your workouts and start training with heart!
*As mentioned before, there are several ways to find your resting and max heart rates, but the most accurate way is to consult with a Human Performance Laboratory to conduct a metabolic exercise stress assessment.
